The Maid of Honor · Chapter 1
Midnight, and the whole farm was asleep. Except me, wrapped in my coat on the porch, pretending I was out there for the fog.
The door creaked behind me.
“Figured you'd be out here,” Tom said.
Six years without hearing that voice. Wool coat, three-day stubble, the old camera hanging around his neck. And two folded blankets over his arm.
“It's four degrees out, Julia. One of these is yours.”
He stopped close. Too close for a guy who swore he'd never come looking for me again.
What do you do?
Take the blanket and thank him.
Charm +1 · Trust +1 · Tom
“Thanks,” I said, and took the blanket without touching his hand. Almost.
He leaned on the railing next to me. We watched the fog swallow the pines, a whole minute without a word. It was nice. Dangerously nice.
“You still make that face when you're cold,” he said.
“What face?”
“That one.” He smiled. “I missed it.”
I wanted to say something clever. Nothing came out.
Tell him you don't need anything from him.
Composure +1
“I'm fine, thanks.”
“You're shaking.”
“That's anger.”
He laughed under his breath, that laugh I knew by heart, and draped the blanket over the railing next to me anyway.
“Then keep it till the anger passes.”
He turned around and left. No pushing. I stared at that blanket for a good five seconds, with tremendous dignity.
Then I wrapped myself in it. It smelled like him. Of course it did.
Pull him under the same blanket.
Boldness +1 · Tension +1 · Tom
I don't know what got into me. The wine at dinner, the fog, six years of bottled-up anger.
“One's enough,” I said. I took a blanket from him and opened it around my shoulders, with room to spare.
He froze for a second. Then he came. Shoulder to shoulder, his arm brushing mine under the wool, the heat climbing slowly.
“This is a terrible idea,” he said, low, right by my ear.
“Terrible.”
Neither of us moved.
Inside, a light came on in the kitchen. Someone had seen us.

Chats
When the chapter ends, whoever got under your skin texts you. They want to know what you thought, they tease, they start the conversation. And you answer however you like, typing, like a real chat.
The character reaches out: asks if you're enjoying it, brings up what happened, starts the conversation.
No canned replies. You type like on WhatsApp and he answers his own way.
Knows everything you've lived in the story so far and gives away nothing of what's coming.
Sealed envelopes with scenes told from the other point of view.
